Lawmaker: Obama, media ignore ‘today’s Rwanda’

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) on Thursday attacked the Obama administration for not intervening in what he called “today’s Rwanda,” the South Sudan civil war.

“President Obama, Vice President Biden, failure to act will be a stain on your administration and a blot on your conscience,” Wolf said.

{mosads}Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday warned the violence could escalate, saying that it “could really present a very serious challenge to the international community with respect to the question of genocide.”

Wolf also claimed that the American media have been insufficiently covering the conflict.

He said that the American public should be paying more attention to South Sudan, given that the U.S. provides the most foreign aid to the country. The U.S. also helped Sudan broker the 2005 peace agreement that led to the 2011 secession vote and the creation of a new nation.

“America helped give birth to South Sudan,” Wolf said.

Wolf further argued that other administrations would be approaching the South Sudan conflict differently.

“President Obama, you must not allow this to continue on your watch. I call on your predecessors, President Bush and President Clinton, to immediately engage in this crisis before more innocent blood is shed,” Wolf said.
