NOAA: Climate change is getting worse
Changes in the earth’s climate are increasing at a steady rate, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned Thursday in a new report.
Greenhouse gas emissions, sea levels, global temperatures and super storms all are trending upward, NOAA said.
{mosads}”These findings reinforce what scientists for decades have observed: that our planet is becoming a warmer place,” NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan said in a statement Thursday. “This report provides the foundational information we need to develop tools and services for communities, business, and nations to prepare for, and build resilience to, the impacts of climate change.”
The report provides detailed updates on global climate change indicators, which 425 scientists from 57 countries helped to compile.
The NOAA found that greenhouse gas concentrations in the globe’s atmosphere continued to rise and reached historically high levels.
For the first time since the NOAA began measuring carbon dioxide at its Hawaii observatory, levels topped 400 parts per million.
Last year ranked within the top 10 years for a high frequency of warm days and bottom 10 years for the frequency of cool days, the report states.
California experienced its driest year on record and Oregon had its fourth driest year.
The recent report adds to one released by the administration earlier this year, which stated climate change has “moved firmly into the present.”
Still Republicans on Capitol Hill seek to derail President Obama’s climate agenda and when questioned on the science behind new reports, many in the GOP dispute it.
Republicans argue that the federal reports spread “alarmist” claims about the globe’s climate.
