Dems ask for investigation into Sullivan’s Md. home

Maryland officials are looking into Alaska Senate candidate Dan Sullivan’s old home on the East Coast.

{mosads}The head of Alaska Democratic Party is asking Maryland authorities to look into whether he improperly claimed tax breaks on a house there while voting in Alaska, according to Alaska Public Radio, and Maryland will look into the claim.

“We have an obligation, a legal obligation, to investigate every claim that someone is improperly receiving a Homestead credit,” Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation Director Robert Young told the radio station.

Sullivan, originally from Ohio, moved to Alaska in the 1990s but lived in Maryland for parts of last decade while he served in the Bush administration and in the Marines. He claimed the suburban D.C. home as his primary residency while living on the East Coast.

His campaign has said he only left Alaska to serve his country.

Sullivan’s time outside of Alaska has been a major attack against him both in his primary and in his general election battle against Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska). Both sides have aired a number of ads focused on his residency going back to last spring, and both Democrats and Republicans expect a close race this fall.
