Bill would make English official language of US

Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) has introduced legislation to make English the official language of the United States.

The conservative firebrand’s bill would also prohibit bilingual ballots and require all naturalization ceremonies to be conducted in English.

{mosads}Stockman argued that establishing English as the official language of the U.S. would unite the country.

“Most immigrants want to learn English,” Stockman said. “Conducting all official government business in English, while leaving people free to conduct private business however they wish, ensures we stay a united and strong country.”

Stockman is not the first lawmaker to offer legislation to make English the official language. Last year, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) introduced a similar bill, H.R. 997
