Governor races

Republican unseats Illinois’s Dem governor

Republican Bruce Rauner beat incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn (D-Ill.) in Tuesday’s election, according to The Associated Press.

{mosads}Rauner topped Quinn 51 to 46 percent with 90 percent of precincts reporting.

The GOP victory came despite President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama recently campaigning in their home state for Quinn, a top GOP target this cycle.

Quinn first took office in January 2009 after former Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) was impeached and removed from office. In 2010, he was narrowly elected to his first full term, winning by less than 1 percentage point.
