Armed Services chairman demands CIA release cable on Iraq War

Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) demanded the CIA declassify a Bush administration cable on the invasion of Iraq.

On the Senate floor Thursday, Levin asked Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Brennan to release a cable on the George W. Bush administration’s campaign to build public support for the Iraqi invasion.

{mosads}“The American people deserve to know the whole truth about this episode,” said Levin, who serves as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “I have renewed my request to declassify the entire cable.”

Levin said his latest effort was prompted by new information that the Czech Republic was pressured into supporting the U.S. assertion that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction — it was later discovered that it didn’t.

Levin voted against the Iraq War because he said there wasn’t enough evidence to justify the invasion.

Levin’s comments come as Brennan is dealing with the release of the report on the CIA’s detention and interrogation report that showed the agency used torture during the Bush administration.

Some lawmakers have called for Brennan’s resignation over the matter.
