Amash: ‘I will vote for a new Speaker’

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) said Tuesday he will vote against Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

“Speaker Boehner has given his best to our conference, and I thank him for his service,” he said. “But it’s time for Republicans to change our leadership. This afternoon, I will vote for a new speaker.”

Amash said that new leadership in the House should “respect the diversity of ideas” within the party. He did not, however, say if he plans to vote for either of the members running against Boehner, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.).

Amash joins a growing list of conservatives who are pledging to oppose Boehner in the Tuesday vote. Many say Boehner didn’t do enough to block President Obama’s executive order on immigration last year.

The libertarian Amash has regularly bucked the party’s leadership, voting against Boehner for Speaker in January 2013.

When he won his primary in August against a Chamber of Commerce-backed candidate, he used his victory speech to slam his opponent and the establishment Republicans who had supported him.
