Al Qaeda group claims credit for Paris attack
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) on Friday claimed credit for the deadly attacks on a satirical French newspaper.
“The leadership of [AQAP] directed the operation, and they have chosen their target carefully,” said in a statement provided to The Intercept. The Associated Press received a similar statement.
Gunmen attacked the offices of the newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris this week, killing 12. The newspaper had published mocking depictions of Prophet Muhammad, angering extremists.
AQAP said in the statement that it waited to claim credit out of concerns for the security of the individuals who carried out the attack.
On Friday, French authorities killed two brothers suspected in the attack as well as a third man who they said was connected to the brothers.
