Hillary hits Senate GOP on women’s issues

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took to Twitter to rip Republicans for a “Congressional trifecta against women” Monday afternoon.

{mosads}Clinton, who’s expected to launch a presidential bid soon, attacked Senate GOP leaders for delaying the confirmation of Loretta Lynch as attorney general until a once-bipartisan human trafficking bill Democrats are holding up over abortion provisions is passed.

“Congressional trifecta against women today: 1) Blocking great nominee, 1st African American woman AG, for longer than any AG in 30 years,” she tweeted. “2) Playing politics with trafficking victims… 3) Threatening women’s health & rights.”

Clinton’s move appears to be an effort to boost her standing with the Democratic base, especially female voters. She’s the clear front-runner for the Democratic nomination if she makes a bid, but recent controversy over her decision to use a private email system while secretary has proven a distraction for her nascent campaign.

The Senate fight has risks for both sides. Democrats risk being seen as obstructionist after pulling support for a bill they’d long backed because of language they just noticed that could limit the ability of trafficking victims to get abortions, while Republicans are being attacked for holding up a high-profile African-American woman’s nomination over issues unrelated to her qualifications for the job.
