Vulnerable GOP senator raises $1.3M

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson (R) raised $1.3 million in the first quarter of the year, his biggest haul, according to a report in the Marshfield News Herald.

The report says Johnson boosted his cash on hand from $600,000 at the end of last year, to $1.5 million at the end of the first quarter. The Wisconsin Republican is expected to file his contributions with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday.

{mosads}Johnson is up for reelection in 2016, and Democrats believe he’s vulnerable. Wisconsin has gone for the Democratic presidential candidate in every election since 1984, meaning 2016 could be a high turnout year for Democrats.

In 2010, Johnson defeated former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) by 5 percentage points in a Republican wave election with no presidential candidates at the top of the ticket.

Feingold is widely expected to seek a rematch in 2016, and polls show he’d begin in a position of strength. According to a survey released in March by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling, Feingold holds an early 9-percentage-point advantage over Johnson.
