Hackers hit Hawaii state website on Sunday

Hackers successfully disrupted traffic to the Hawaii government’s website on Sunday in an attack that appeared to protest a major construction project in the state.

The denial-of-service attack affected the website’s availability for several hours on Sunday afternoon, though no data or services were ever at risk, according to Jodi Leong, a spokeswoman for the governor.

{mosads}During roughly the same period, environmentalist hackers claiming affiliation with Anonymous also hit the website of Thirty Meter Telescope, an effort to build one of the world’s largest telescopes on Hawaii’s Big Island.

“They keep directing attempts to get into our website such that it overwhelms the website,” said Sandra Dawson, a spokeswoman for the organization, according to The Associated Press.

The cyberattack, which continued through Monday, was bad enough to disrupt regular work at the group, she said.

A blog called Operation Green Rights claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Nothing will ever justify the destruction of ecosystems; filthy money can never replace them,” a post on Sunday stated.
