Bloomberg editor to play role in Romney summit
Bloomberg Politics co-managing editor Mark Halperin will participate in a summit this weekend hosted by former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Time magazine is reporting.
Halperin will co-host a “Sunrise Pilates” session Saturday morning with Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann, according to an event flier Time obtained Thursday.
No other journalists are noted as appearing on the event’s flier.
{mosads}Bloomberg did immediately comment about Halperin’s involvement with the event.
Time said the summit — dubbed the “Club Med” for Republican mega-donors — will run Friday and Saturday in Deer Valley, Utah.
It will present its roughly 250 attendees with the chance to network with many of the possible 2016 GOP presidential candidates.
Time said Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.) and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina are the official White House hopefuls in attendance for the summit.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker are making appearances as well. All are potential contenders but have not yet publicly decided on launching campaigns next year.
The event’s summary of “enthusiast sessions” said Rubio was scheduled play flag football with pre-registered attendees Friday morning.
Graham, meanwhile, will participate in a skeet shooting session Saturday morning with guests who sign up in advance.
The flier also said Mitt Romney, who was the GOP nominee in 2012, will host one hiking session Friday with his son, Tagg Romney, and another Saturday with Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.).
Ann Romney, a noted equestrian, is also scheduled to lead a horseback riding session Saturday afternoon, the event summary said.
Time said Mitt Romney began the annual weekend retreat during his 2012 bid and has carried it on ever since.
Halperin drew criticism last month after a controversial interview with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) that some viewers believed was insensitive and racist.
“Your last name is Cruz and you’re from Texas. Just based on that, should you have to appeal to Hispanic voters?” he asked Cruz on May 10.
Halperin also questioned Cruz about his favorite Cuban music and food.
He prodded the senator to welcome Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), then a new entrant into the 2016 Democratic presidential field, “en Español.”
Halperin apologized for his remarks May 11.
“In no way was I asking Senator Cruz to ‘prove’ he was an ‘authentic’ Latino,” he said.
“I apologize to those that were offended, and to Senator Cruz,” he added. “I promised that I will work to make the tone and questions better next time.”
