Rick Perry: Trump ‘way out of touch with reality’

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry is slamming Donald Trump as lacking real-world experience in dealing with immigration.

“Donald, you might want to take a trip down to Texas sometime to meet some of the Hispanic Americans who have helped make our nation great and learn a little bit about what we need to do to secure our border with Mexico,” Perry said in a YouTube video uploaded Wednesday morning.

{mosads}“Otherwise, your remarks might make for good reality TV, but they’re way out of touch with reality,” he added.

Perry was responding to a tweet that Trump, one of his rivals for the GOP presidential nomination, authored on Sunday.

“Rick Perry failed at the border,” Trump wrote. “Now he is critical of me.”

“He needs a new pair of glasses to see the crimes committed by illegal immigrants,” the real estate magnate said.

Perry countered on Wednesday that Trump’s proposal for the construction of a border wall would be inadequate for dealing with the problem.

“I know securing the border is going to take a lot more than just building a wall,” he said.

“It’s going to take more personnel on the ground, aviation assets, quick response times and, yes, strategic fencing in the metropolitan areas,” Perry added.

Perry also rebuked Trump for his controversial comments suggesting many immigrants from Mexico are rapists and criminals.

“I also know your comments about Mexicans are offensive,” Perry said. “And they don’t reflect the values of the Republican Party.”

“Mexican Americans have been part of the fabric of Texas from the very beginning.

Trump has repeatedly attacked illegal immigrants and Mexico since launching his presidential campaign in New York last month.

He argued on Monday that “infectious disease is pouring across the border” in addition to drugs and violent crime.
