Former President Jimmy Carter underwent a procedure Monday at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to remove a “mass” from his liver, according to his nonprofit center.

The operation to remove the mass, which was described as small, “proceeded without issues, and the prognosis is excellent for a full recovery,” according to the Carter Center statement.

Carter, 90, cut short a trip to Guyana in May due to an illness. He is the second-oldest living president, behind George H.W. Bush, and has gone on a media tour to promote his recently released book.

A spokesperson for Carter declined to provide additional details.
