Trump tries to clarify Megyn Kelly ‘blood’ remark

A day after controversial statements about a female debate moderator, Donald Trump sought to clarify Saturday morning that he was not making a reference to menstruation.

The presidential candidate on Friday night told CNN that when Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly was asking him aggressive questions during Thursday’s GOP presidential debate, “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her — wherever.”

Trump tweeted Saturday morning that “wherever” meant Kelly’s nose, and chided those who focus on political correctness:

{mosads}Trump faced immediate backlash late Friday night after the comments. RedState Gathering, a key conservative event, disinvited him from his Saturday speaking slot, with RedState head Erick Erickson saying “there are just real lines of decency a person running for President should not cross.”

Trump’s campaign responded to RedState’s move overnight by saying “this is just another example of weakness through being politically correct. For all of the people who were looking forward to Mr. Trump coming, we will miss you. Blame Erick Erickson, your weak and pathetic leader.”

His campaign did not seek to clarify at the time how Trump’s statement should be interpreted.

Fellow GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina also criticized Trump’s comments, tweeting “Mr. Trump: There. Is. No. Excuse,” before adding, “I stand with @megynkelly.”
