Christie: Track immigrants the way FedEx tracks packages

To create a system that tracks illegal immigrants in the United States, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie wants to look to the way FedEx tracks packages.

Speaking in the early-voting state of New Hampshire, the GOP presidential candidate on Saturday said the United States needs a way to stop losing track of people stay in the country longer than they are legally allowed.

“At any moment, FedEx can tell you where that package is. It’s on the truck. It’s at the station. It’s on the airplane,” he said, according to NJ.com.

“We need to have a system that tracks you from the moment you come in, and then when your time is up … however long your visa is, then we go get you. We tap you on the shoulder and say, ‘Thanks for coming. Time to go.’ “

The report noted that Christie’s campaign spokeswoman, Samantha Smith, is Fred Smith’s daughter.

Christie said the U.S. has become a “nation of lawlessness” under President Obama.

The New Jersey governor also took an indirect shot at GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, who has called for building a wall along the southern U.S. border and making Mexico pay for it.

“Please do not think we’re going to build a wall across the entire 2,000-mile border,” said Christie, who added that he has met with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and did not expect him to pay the estimated $100 billion cost.

Christie added that the recent talk in the GOP presidential primary about repealing the 14th Amendment makes Republicans “sound like we’re anti-immigrant.”

“And we’re not,” he said. “We want people to do it legally.”
