DC-bound Amtrak train derails in Vermont

An Amtrak train traveling from Vermont to Washington, D.C., has derailed in Roxbury, Vt. 

{mosads}The train, Amtrak train 55, was traveling from St. Albans, Vt., to Washington, D.C.’s Union Station on Amtrak’s “Vermonter” route when it derailed, according to Amtrak officials. 

Four passengers and one crew memer were injured in the accident, according to the Federal Railroad Administration, but Amtrak says none of the injuries are life threatening.

Amtrak on Twitter said it was aware of the situation and that emergency personnel are responding.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) said Monday afternoon that the train was carrying 98 passengers and four crew members at the time of the derailment. The agency said the preliminary cause of the investigation is rocks sliding into the path of the train.

The agency said earlier on Monday morning that it is launching a full-scale investigation into the derailment.

FRA is aware of the Amtrak derailment in Vermont and has sent investigators to the site. We will update as information becomes available.

Amtrak has suffered a pair of high-profile accidents this earlier year, including a derailment in Philadelphia that killed eight passengers.
