Cruz: Trump ’embodies New York values’

Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) is hitting rival Donald Trump as embodying “New York values,” adding new fuel to the growing rivalry between the two men in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

With Trump repeatedly raising questions about Cruz’s eligibility to run, the Texas senator is beginning to fight back, and late Tuesday offered several pointed criticisms of the billionaire businessman.

{mosads}”Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,” Cruz said during an interview on “The Howie Carr Show.” “Listen, the Donald seems to be a little bit rattled.”

“This race is turning more and more into a two-person race, between me and Donald,” he continued. “What we’re seeing is conservatives are uniting behind our campaign.”

Cruz repeated the line that Trump embodies New York values on Fox News’s “The Kelly File,” saying when asked to elaborate, “The rest of the country knows exactly what New York values are.”

“I got to say, they’re not Iowa values and they’re not New Hampshire values,” he added.

Trump has for a second week called into question Cruz’s Canadian birth. Cruz’s mother was an American, and he says he is a natural-born citizen under the Constitution.

Trump has cited a liberal Harvard professor, Laurence Tribe, to argue that the citizenship question is unsettled. That drew another rebuke from Cruz.

“Why are Hillary’s strongest supporters backing Donald Trump?” Cruz said.

“I do think it’s interesting that Hillary Clinton’s key supporters are doing everything they can to echo Donald’s attacks on me,” he reiterated during his Fox News appearance.

Asked about Clinton’s remarks that Trump “was basically a Democrat before he was a Republican,” Cruz said on Carr’s show: “Hillary would know well how to identify Democrats.”
