Gingrich: Cruz has ‘more at stake’ in Iowa than anyone else

A loss in Iowa’s caucuses on Monday would be a major blow to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), according to former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.).

“I think Cruz has more at stake tonight than anyone else,” he told host Neil Cavuto on Fox Business’s “Cavuto: Coast to Coast.”

{mosads}“[It is] because it is a good state for him, he worked it so hard and he built such a big organization. He has done almost everything you’re supposed to do in Iowa.”

Gingrich, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2012, said Donald Trump could edge out Cruz in the state despite not having invested nearly as much in a ground game.

“If Trump overwhelms him by just sheer momentum and publicity, I think that will be seen as a very significant blow to Cruz,” he said. “[Trump] is much further ahead in New Hampshire than he is here.

“It begins to look like at that point that everybody better figure out how to gang up on Trump. He’s going to have huge momentum out of New Hampshire,” he added.

Cruz trails Trump by about 5 points in Iowa despite making an effort to visit all of the state’s 99 counties, according to a recent poll.
