Clinton wins Iowa delegate after coin toss

Hillary Clinton on Monday night secured an Iowa delegate over Bernie Sanders by the flip of a coin.

A video captured by a Univision reporter shows caucus officials resorting to a coin toss to decide which Democratic presidential candidate would receive the precinct’s fifth delegate.

“It was very, very close. Remember this is a caucus, it was very, very close. It was called by a coin toss,” says a woman in the video.

According to the rules for Democratic precincts, ties between two or more candidates can be broken by a coin toss.

The Des Moines Register reported at least two instances of decisions by coin toss, all breaking for Clinton.

With 95 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton had 49.8 percent of state delegates to Sanders’s 49.6 percent. The candidates will likely split the delegates almost evenly.
