Cruz aide: Trump should drop out if he doesn’t win majority in NY
Ted Cruz’s campaign manager said Donald Trump should drop out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination if he doesn’t clinch the majority of votes in his home state’s primary later this month.
{mosads}”If he doesn’t get over 50 percent, he should probably consider dropping out, like everyone else has when they don’t win their home state in a dramatic fashion,” Cruz campaign manager Jeff Roe said in an interview with ABC News’s Powerhouse Politics podcast Thursday.
He said he doesn’t expect Trump to take his advice and added that he’s a “huge favorite” going in New York’s April 19 contest.
“I’m assuming Donald is very strong in his home state,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll come out with a pretty good cut of the delegates there.”
Trump is predicted to blow away his Republican rivals in the Empire State, taking 53 percent of support, according to a RealClearPolitics average. Ohio Gov. John Kasich follows at a distant second with 22 percent, while Cruz stands at 18.6 percent. There are 95 delegates up for grabs.
Marco Rubio dropped out of the presidential race after coming in second in his home state of Florida, and Kasich said that he would consider suspending his campaign if he didn’t win in Ohio.
