Obama: ‘LGBT rights are human rights’

President Obama says protecting LGBT rights worldwide remains an essential goal during his remaining time in office.

“In too many places, LGBT individuals grow up forced to conceal or deny who they truly are for fear of persecution, discrimination and violence,” he said Tuesday in a statement. “All nations and all communities can, and must, do better.

{mosads}“Fortunately, human rights champions and good citizens around the world continue to strive towards this goal every day by lifting up the simple truth that LGBT rights are human rights. The United States honors their work and will continue to support them in their struggle for human dignity.”

Obama touted his administration’s victories for the LGBT community during his presidency.

“Our nation is committed to the principle that all people should be treated fairly and with respect,” he said.

“Advancing this goal has long been a cornerstone of American diplomacy, and I am proud that my administration has made advancing the human rights of LGBT individuals a specific focus of our engagement around the world,” Obama added.

Obama’s remarks Tuesday came as he observed the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia.

The Obama administration issued guidance Friday telling America’s public school districts to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity.

It also announced earlier this month that it was preparing to create the first national monument honoring the struggle for gay rights. It will be at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, the site of riots in 1969 after a police raid on the bar.

Obama hopes to designate the area under the authority of the National Park Service in June, which is LGBT Pride Month.
