Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) on Tuesday said presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s ethnicity are “wrong.”

{mosads}“Trump’s gonna have to answer for this, and I think the comments that he made and the way that he made them were wrong,” Chaffetz told CNN’s “New Day.”

Chaffetz criticized Trump for being “misinformed” but demurred when asked whether the attacks on the judge’s ethnicity were racist.

“I think they were very misinformed. The idea that he referred to him as Mexican — he’s from Indiana, he’s an American,” he said.

“You can disagree on the politics of his background, you may disagree with the rulings that you’re getting, but to suggest that heritage will disqualify you or inhibit your ability to make a fair ruling — I don’t agree with that,” Chaffetz added when asked a second time whether Trump was being racist.
