Dallas sniper suspect was Army reservist, served in Afghanistan

Dallas sniper suspect Micah Xavier Johnson is a former Army reservist, the Army confirmed Friday. 

Johnson, 25, had served as an Army reservist from March 2009 until April 2015. He served as a carpentry and masonry specialist, his record showed, and achieved the rank of Private First Class, effective May 2010. 

{mosads}He deployed to Afghanistan from November 2013 through July 2014, serving with the 420th Engineer Brigade, and served with the 420th Engineer Brigade in Seagonville, Texas, throughout his time in the Army Reserves. 

Police say Johnson killed five police officers and injured seven others in a sniper attack Thursday night during a protest against recent police shootings of two black men. Johnson was killed by a bomb robot detonated by police. 

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said Johnson had told a hostage negotiator that he was upset about the recent police shootings and wanted to kill white people, especially police officers.

Johnson was awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/ “M” Device, and the NATO Medal.
