Donald Trump isn’t looking for an “attack dog” as his vice presidential pick, he said Wednesday, as election-watchers were in a frenzy over whom he will ultimately choose.
{mosads}The Wednesday comments are an about-face from what he told The Wall Street Journal a day before, when he said he’s looking for a running mate who is a “fighter skilled in hand-to-hand combat.”
The presumptive GOP nominee told Fox News Wednesday that he is looking for a person who would be able to keep the focus of the election on policy.
“I want to pick somebody who is very good. I want to pick somebody who is solid, who’s smart. I’m not looking for an attack dog,” he said on Fox’s “Special Report.”
“Frankly, I’m looking for somebody who really understands what we are talking about because I’d rather have the whole thing be on policy. … People think of me as an attacker, but I’d rather be talking about policy.”
Trump met with three main contenders for the vice president slot on Wednesday: Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions. Pence and Gingrich are seen as top candidates, along with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whom Trump campaigned with earlier this week.
