Dem Senate nominee calls Toomey an ‘a–hole’

Pennsylvania Senate nominee Katie McGinty (D) got into some hot water Monday when she called her rival, Sen. Pat Toomey (R), an “a–hole.”

{mosads}It was a shocking comment given the decorous attitude Senate candidates usually try to adopt.

But McGinty got caught up in the moment during a press conference on raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Egged on by Chris Shelton, the president of the Communication Workers of America who blasted the current $7.25 per hour minimum wage as “bulls—,” McGinty chimed in with some blue language of her own.

“I think I might borrow from Chris’s speech there in terms of Pat Toomey. He’s an a–hole,” she said, prompting laughs and applause from the audience.

But Republicans were not amused.

The pro-GOP Senate Leadership Fund immediately blasted out an email calling on McGinty to apologize.

“Katie McGinty showed absolutely zero class in using profanity to insult Sen. Pat Toomey on the campaign trail,” said the group’s spokesman, Ian Prior.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee also jumped in to criticize the candidate’s comments about the Pennsylvania Republican. 

“Do national Democrats condone this type of language and name-calling?” the committee asked, pressing Democrats on whether they would still allow her speak at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, when Hillary Clinton will accept her party’s presidential nomination.

McGinty quickly backtracked, issuing a statement of apology to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“I regret the language I used and apologize to Sen. Toomey. Our campaign is about moving Pennsylvania forward and we’re going to continue to talk about the issues that are important to Pennsylvania families,” she said.
