Wasserman Schultz challenger files FEC complaint

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s (D-Fla.) primary challenger, Tim Canova, filed a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint against the former Democratic National Committee chairwoman on Monday, his campaign announced. 

Canova’s campaign said the complaint alleges that Wasserman Schultz “used her position with the DNC and the resources of the DNC to improperly benefit her congressional campaign.”

{mosads}His complaint says “the DNC paid a team of national, senior communications and political professionals significant sums of money for their consulting services and the Wasserman Schultz for Congress Campaign utilized these services free of charge.”

Canova, a law professor, said the thousands of internal emails published last month by WikiLeaks showed the DNC under Wasserman Schultz used resources to “interfere” with his campaign. 

Canova’s campaign had signaled it would file the complaint, as he faces an uphill battle against Wasserman Schultz ahead of an Aug. 30 primary.

Wasserman Schultz stepped down last month as head of the DNC after the release of the emails, which showed officials apparently working to undermine Bernie Sanders’s campaign against Hillary Clinton for the party’s presidential nomination.

Several other top aides also stepped down amid the revelations.
