Boston Globe editorial: Shut down Clinton Foundation if Hillary wins

The Boston Globe editorial board on Tuesday called for the Clinton Foundation to be shut down if Hillary Clinton becomes president.

“The once-and-maybe-future first family will have plenty to keep them busy next year if Hillary Clinton defeats Donald Trump in November,” reads the newspaper’s editorial.

{mosads}”The foundation should remove a political — and actual — distraction and stop accepting funding,” it continued. “If Clinton is elected, the foundation should be shut down.”

The editorial board members noted that many donations to the global charity come from overseas, with millions coming from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Oman. Trump, the GOP nominee, has criticized Clinton over the foundation accepting money from countries with poor human rights records.

Hillary Clinton joined the renamed Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation in 2013, when she left her post as secretary of State. During Clinton’s time in the Obama administration, donations not approved by State Department ethics officials were officially banned in an agreement reached with the organization.

The Democrat resigned from the foundation’s board when she launched her White House bid last year. But the group’s funding and work during Clinton’s tenure at the department has been scrutinized throughout her campaign, including recently released correspondence between a longtime Clinton confidant with ties to the foundation and State Department aides.

The Globe noted that Bill Clinton has said the structure of the foundation, which he established in 1997 as the William J. Clinton Foundation, will change if his wife becomes president.

“There’ll clearly be some changes in what the Clinton Foundation does and how we do it,” Clinton said in June. “We’ll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it.”
