Trump aide on immigration plan: No amnesty, no sanctuary cities

Donald Trump’s campaign manager on Thursday sought to clarify that the candidate does not support “amnesty,” “sanctuary cities” or “open borders” after the GOP presidential nominee used softer language in a series of statements on immigration.

Trump supports requiring businesses to use a federal database that tracks immigration status to “make them more accountable,” Conway said.

She tried to draw a distinction between Trump’s plans and those of his former primary rivals Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush, whom he targeted for harsh criticism on the issue.

“It is different,” Conway insisted.

“Sen. Rubio is a particularly different case because he led the Gang of Eight,” she said. “Their plan was amnesty. Their plan was — and is — if they had their way, and I think it hurt him to try to work with these Democrats who want open borders.”

Conway also criticized Hillary Clinton for her position, saying the Democratic nominee supports lax immigration policies.

“She’s actually considered moving to the left of President Obama on the issue of immigration, and the only way that the voters are going to know that is if we tell them, because she won’t,” Conway said.

“She’s hiding from that.”
