Former GOP cabinet member endorses Clinton

A member of President George H.W. Bush’s cabinet is crossing over to support Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, The Huffington Post reported Wednesday.

{mosads}“I’m an American, and I’m concerned about my country,” said Louis Wade Sullivan, who served as secretary of Health and Human Services from 1989 to 1993.

“Though my enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton is somewhat tempered, I certainly believe she is an infinitely better choice for president than Donald Trump.” 

Sullivan was only African-American to serve as a cabinet secretary under Bush. He has not publicly announced his support for a presidential candidate since leaving his cabinet position in 1993, according to the Huffington Post.

Sullivan said he has been a lifelong moderate Republican, though he cast a vote for Democrat John F. Kennedy in 1960.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Sullivan slammed Trump, calling the GOP presidential nominee “unstable” and saying he “regularly changes his mind.”

Sullivan said Trump hasn’t “articulated a clear underpinning for the policies that he has espoused.”

“I’m concerned about his attitude toward minorities,” he said. “His statements against Mexicans I find repulsive; the same of his statements toward Muslims and his ridicule of women. I want to have a president that I can be proud of.”

Sullivan also called Trump’s pitch to black voters “superficial.”

“They don’t convince me as being genuine. He’s said that blacks don’t have anything to lose if he was president,” he said. “Well, I’m interested in: What do they have to gain? He has not articulated that.”

He added that both Hillary and Bill Clinton have worked with the black community over the years on a number of issues, noting he is confident their relationship with the black community is “genuine.”

“On the other hand, I’m not aware of anything that Trump has done positive with the black community,” he said.
