Amazon’s Jeff Bezos: Trump eroding our democracy

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Thursday blasted Republican nominee Donald Trump for hinting that he might not accept the result of the presidential election.

“Its not just going after the media, and threatening retribution for those who scrutinize him, it is also saying that he may not give a graceful concession speech,” Bezos said at Vanity Fair mangazine’s New Establishment Summit conference, according to Politico.

His comments come after Trump declined to say that he would accept the results of the election if they don’t go his way.

The GOP nominee said at the third presidential debate of 2016 on Wednesday that he wanted to keep the American people in “suspense.” Those remarks sparked a firestorm of criticism.

“I will totally accept the result of this great and historic presidential election,” Trump said at a rally in Ohio on Thursday, before adding after a long pause, “If I win.”

TechCrunch reported that Bezos also criticized Trump for comments that he would jail Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton if elected.

“Saying he might lock up his opponent if he wins erodes democracy around the edges,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, has been at odds with Trump throughout the presidential campaign.

In December, Trump attacked the Post and Bezos, accusing the billionaire of using his newspaper to lower Amazon’s tax bill. The companies are owned through separate structures.

Trump has seemed wary of Silicon Valley and tech more broadly. He’s also called in the past for a boycott of Apple products over the company’s support for strong encryption.

Bezos fired back when Trump attacked him last winter.

“Finally trashed by [Trump],” he tweeted at the time, before referring to his space flight company. “Will still reserve him a seat on the Blue Origin rocket.”

Bezos reportedly said on Thursday that he regrets that tweet.

The Amazon CEO also took a shot at investor Peter Thiel, a strong Trump supporter. Thiel made a $1.25 million donation in support of Trump’s candidacy this month, a donation that led many in Silicon Valley to call for companies to cut their ties with him.

“Peter Thiel is a contrarian,” Bezos said, according to Business Insider. “And you have to remember that contrarians are usually wrong.”
