Trump: Clinton’s Syria policy would lead to ‘World War III’
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Tuesday that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s policy on Syria would lead to “World War III.”
Clinton has called for the U.S.-led coalition to implement safe zones in Syria for civilians fleeing attacks by the regime forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
{mosads}The zones would be protected by U.S. airpower, meaning that any Syrian aircraft that ventured into the air space over the safe zones would have to be shot down. The problem is that Russian aircraft are also backing Assad and would have to be shot down if they violate the zones.
So far, the Obama administration has effectively ruled out implementing safe zones or no-fly zones over concerns it would be considered war against Syria and could start a war with Russia.
Trump’s comment came during an interview with Reuters at the Trump National Doral golf club in Miami.
Trump also said removing Assad should be secondary to fighting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
