Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson says the FBI’s announcement that it is reviewing newly found emails related to Hillary Clinton’s email case is troubling.
“Well, obviously, the FBI didn’t do this lightly,” Johnson said Friday on CNN. “There has to be something there.”
{mosads}“You just don’t do this 11 days before the election knowing you’re not going to be able to conclude the investigation in 11 days.”
Johnson said the Democrat winning the presidency under such circumstances would be unusual.
“When they dropped the criminal investigation, I think they were making a statement then that they did not want a potential president-elect to be under criminal investigation,” he said.
“But that’s what’s now going to be the case if she is elected. And she will control those jobs that control how this issue moves forward, which points to a special prosecutor. Really, this is a mess, this is a mess.”
The FBI on Friday said it is assessing newly found emails that appear to be “pertinent” to the bureau’s investigation of how Clinton handled classified information on the private email setup she used while secretary of State.
The agency’s announcement is a stunning move that thrusts back into the spotlight 11 days from Election Day.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has frequently said Clinton’s email arrangement disqualifies her from ever becoming president.
Johnson, a former GOP governor of New Mexico, is hoping for a strong showing on Nov. 8, with many Americans saying they are loath to support Clinton or Trump.
