FBI unlikely to finish Clinton email review by elections: report

An official said Thursday that it’s increasingly unlikely the FBI’s review of newly discovered emails linked to Hillary Clinton’s private email server will be finished before the elections, USA Today reports.

Authorities are also not ready to disclose the results of their preliminary investigation or provide any updates about the course of the probe, the official told the newspaper.

{mosads}Law enforcement sources also told Reuters that FBI Director James Comey’s decision to notify Congress about the new email review was driven, in part, by a fear of internal leaks.

Several sources told the news outlet it was unclear whether FBI officials would publicly reveal any information about the investigation before Election Day; a pair of sources said it was unlikely.

A source in contact with investigators told Reuters that such a decision “depends on how it goes and what they find.”

Last week, the FBI director unexpectedly announced that the bureau had discovered additional emails that could be related to its investigation of the private email setup Clinton used while secretary of State. The messages came from a device owned by Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

Clinton’s campaign has pushed back on Comey’s brief letter to lawmakers last Friday.

The Democratic presidential nominee has called on the FBI to quickly release more detailed information about the emails.
