Norquist: Trump hasn’t signed pledge to oppose tax increases

One day before the presidential election, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist said that Donald Trump had not publicly signed the anti-tax crusader’s pledge not to raise taxes.

“He has not made a commitment not to raise taxes,” Norquist said Monday on CNBC. “He has committed to a significant tax cut first thing, which is good and healthy, but he has not yet made a commitment to the American people never to raise taxes.”

Politicians that sign Norquist’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge commit to opposing tax increases. According to Americans for Tax Reform’s website, 48 senators, 220 House members and 11 governors have signed the pledge.

Norquist said that he would “feel more comfortable” if Trump promised in writing not raise taxes. Norquist said that he had been told that the GOP presidential nominee had signed the pledge, but when his group asked for the signed pledge, they did not receive it.

Still, Norquist praised Trump’s tax plan, calling it “very healthy” since it lowers the corporate tax rate and allows businesses to immediately write off the full costs of their capital investments. On the other hand, he said that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has “made a commitment to raise taxes dramatically.”

Norquist also blasted Clinton and President Obama on labor policy.

He said that Clinton wants to crack down on independent contractors and that President Obama’s appointees to the National Labor Relations Board are “working to make Uber illegal.” Norquist also said that Obama and Clinton want to hurt companies with franchise structures.
