GOP Sen. Flake: I’ll ‘sustain and support whomever is elected’

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said he plans to support whoever is elected to the White House.

{mosads}In a Medium post published Tuesday, Flake said he doesn’t know who will be the next president or whether he will be serving in the majority or minority in the Senate in January.

“What I do know is that I will sustain and support whomever is elected as my new President,” Flake, a frequent critic of Republican nominee Donald Trump, said in the post.

“If my Party’s nominee does not prevail and [Democratic nominee] Hillary Clinton is elected, I will assume the best and look for the good.”

The Arizona senator said some of the “toughest” issues the country faces are “best tackled with divided government, where both parties share the political risk, hold hands and jump together.”

“I will take my role with regard to advice and consent seriously,” Flake said.

“This does not mean I will arbitrarily block from consideration those who are qualified to serve, nor will I encourage my colleagues to engage in perpetual hearings, investigations and inquiries into the conduct of those who may have bested us in this election.”

Moving forward, Flake said the country faces serious challenges.

“Fortunately, we have a wonderful, durable system here, and we need to trust in our institutions,” he said.

“Today of all days, it’s great to live in America.”

Flake said earlier this month he was considering voting for independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin.

In an interview with ABC, the Arizona senator said it hasn’t “been easy” withholding his support from Trump. He added he thinks a Trump presidency is “very unlikely.”
