ObamaCare sign-ups surge post-election

The day after Donald Trump’s presidential election victory marked the strongest day of ObamaCare signups in this year’s open enrollment period so far.

More than 100,000 people selected plans through HealthCare.gov on Wednesday, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced.

{mosads}“Best day yet this Open Enrollment,” HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell wrote in a tweet.

Wednesday marked the first day that the Obama administration actively began marketing its healthcare signup period this year, which began Nov. 1.

Officials at HHS had already planned to expand the program’s outreach following the election, after the candidates’ campaigns no longer clogged the airwaves.

Even though the GOP’s wave victory on Election Day likely dooms ObamaCare, the White House has made clear that it plans to forge on with this year’s enrollment period.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Wednesday that officials will still urge people to sign up for coverage through ObamaCare.

“There is no specific thing in mind that we’re going to do differently now,” Earnest said as he addressed reporters for the first time since President-elect Trump declared victory.

Enroll America, a top advocacy group for the healthcare law, also released a statement trying to calm fears about the fate of the marketplaces. The group called it “critically important” to remain focused on signups and reassured people who have insurance through the exchanges.

Burwell also has took part in several media appearances on Thursday — Fox News Latino, WNYC-FM and Latina Magazine — to promote the signup period.
