Poll: Majority say Sotomayor should be confirmed
As she meets with senators on Tuesday, Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is faring well in the court of public opinion, according to a new poll.
The Gallup survey released Tuesday found that a majority – 54 percent – say the Senate should confirm Sotomayor for the high court. Twenty-eight percent say it shouldn’t and 19 percent are unsure.
Interestingly, Gallup also charted how Sotomayor is doing compared to previous Supreme Court nominees.
The partisan breakdown in the survey is predictable. Three quarter of Democrats think the Senate should confirm her while nearly 57 percent of Republicans oppose her confirmation. More than half – 54 percent – of Independents think she should be confirmed.
Interestingly, though, exactly half of Republicans think Sotomayor is two extreme. More than a quarter of Republicans think Sotomayor is in the mainstream.
There was a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent in the poll.
