Poll: Trump’s pre-inauguration approval rating half as high as Obama’s

President-elect Donald Trump will be one of the most unpopular presidents to enter office, several new polls have found.

In an ABC News/Washington Post poll out Tuesday morning, 40 percent of Americans approve of how Trump has handled his transition. In 2009, 80 percent of Americans approved of President Obama’s transition.

Former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush had similar ratings, with 72 percent, 81 percent and 82 percent approval, respectively, as presidents-elect.

{mosads}The ABC/Washington Post poll found that 54 percent of Americans view Trump unfavorably. The unfavorable ratings of former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton and Obama ranged from 9 to 20 percent when they entered office. The new poll echoes similar ones produced by CNN and Gallup.

A CNN/ORC poll also released Tuesday found Trump had a 40 percent approval rating — a historically low number for a president-elect.

A Gallup poll released over the weekend found similar numbers, with Trump’s favorables historically low.

Trump’s inauguration is on Friday. Hundreds of thousands of protesters are expected to come to Washington, D.C., for the event. Dozens of Democratic lawmakers have said they plan not to attend the event.
