Trump will meet House Oversight chair Tuesday
President Trump plans to meet with House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) on Tuesday in the Oval Office, according to the White House.
The meeting is notable because Chaffetz has broad powers to investigating waste, fraud and abuse across the federal government.
The White House listed the sit-down on Trump’s daily schedule but did not say what is on the agenda for the meeting.
{mosads}Last month, Chaffetz said he’d requested the federal government’s contract with Trump’s Washington, D.C., hotel amid questions about whether Trump is violating the lease agreement.
Democrats have raised questions about the new Trump International Hotel that occupies the historic Old Post Office building, which is owned by the federal government. Trump’s contract with the General Services Administration (GSA) prohibits elected officials from being a party to the lease or benefiting from it, and Democrats have called on the GSA to clarify whether Trump has violated the terms of his lease agreement.
Chaffetz has also said his committee has no plans to investigate Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of rampant voter fraud during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Chaffetz was an outspoken critic of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and has said more than once since Election Day that he’d continue to investigate her use of a private email server while secretary of State.
