GOP rep splits with Trump on Meals on Wheels

GOP Rep. Chris Collins (N.Y.) says he disagrees with President Trump’s federal budget blueprint, specifically citing its lack of funding for Meals on Wheels.

“This is the president’s budget. I’m not sure where the details came from,” Collins said Thursday on CNN’s “The Messy Truth.”

“But when we get into appropriations, Meals on Wheels is a wonderful program,” added Collins, the first congressional member to endorse Trump during the 2016 presidential race.

Trump released his first federal budget blueprint Thursday, proposing a radical reduction of the size of government.

The outline suggests ending funding for Meals on Wheels, a program that provides meals for the elderly, poor and military veterans.

The budget’s proposed cuts include $3 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program, which includes Meals on Wheels and other community and housing initiatives.

The program, which focuses on delivering food to individuals who cannot leave their homes, says it served more than 219 million meals to 2 million seniors in 2015.
