FCC chairman promises ‘comprehensive review’ of existing media regulations

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission promised on Tuesday that the agency would look to cut media regulations.

During a speech at the National Association of Broadcasters’ convention in Las Vegas, Ajit Pai said that the FCC would vote at its May 18 meeting on a “comprehensive review” of the agency’s existing media regulations.

“Given the realities of today’s media marketplace, we need to see which rules are still necessary and which should be relaxed or repealed,” he said.

{mosads}He also hinted that the commission would look to roll back regulations on media ownership.

Last week, Pai pushed through a rule that will allow major broadcasters to buy up certain types of television stations at a discount toward the national media cap of reaching 39 percent of households.

At the time, Pai also hinted that the FCC would look into raising the media ownership limit.
