WATCH: Politics and policy as Trump weighs Paris call

If President Trump withdraws from the Paris climate agreement, it’s a sign that he’s putting politics over policy, a former Obama administration official says.

Trump is set to address the nation Thursday afternoon regarding his intentions toward the global climate pact.

Withdrawing from the agreement “seems like it plays to a political need to satisfy something he said on the campaign trail, rather than any real policy outcome,” Christy Goldfuss of the Center for American Progress said in an interview.

{mosads}Goldfuss, a former chairwoman of the Council on Environmental Quality, said that Exxon, Shell and “a thousand businesses” say that U.S. competitiveness will be diminished by a withdrawal supported by Republicans including Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt.

“You have industry pushing him to stay in … nations, our partners around the world, the G7 saying ‘stay in’ … It’s very hard to see what the value is here except for a small political win that Steve Bannon and Administrator Pruitt feel that they need,” she said.
