Senate Intel chiefs to meet with Mueller next week
The top senators on the Senate Intelligence Committee will meet next week Bob Mueller, the special counsel appointed to lead the investigation into Russia’s involvement in the election, and any possible links to President Trump’s campaign.
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) told CNN on Thursday that “we’ve got it scheduled [for] next week.”
A spokeswoman for Warner, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, confirmed that both Warner and Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the panel’s chairman, are meeting with Mueller next week. A spokeswoman for Burr didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.
Warner said he and Burr are also “in discussions” with Mueller about how to see former FBI Director James Comey’s memos detailing his conversations with Trump. They have been seeking the meeting since Mueller’s appointment last month.
{mosads}Comey testified on Thursday to the Intelligence Committee that he had handed over the memos to Mueller.
In addition to Mueller’s investigation, the Senate Intelligence Committee and Senate Judiciary Committee are conducting their own investigations. They have stressed they want to sit down to hash out boundaries with the former FBI director to make sure they aren’t interfering with his investigation.
In addition to meeting with Mueller, Burr separately told reporters on Thursday that the committee will hold closed-door meetings with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and NSA Director Mike Rogers.
“It will probably be next week,” Burr told reporters, while noting the meetings hadn’t been scheduled.
The two officials were part of an open hearing on Wednesday at which they repeatedly refused to answer questions without giving a clear explanation for why. The issue frustrated senators on the panel, and led Burr to admonish the witnesses at the hearing’s conclusion.
