Vicente Fox: Reagan said ‘tear down this wall’ 30 years ago, now Trump is building one

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox slammed President Trump on Monday over his vow to build a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, drawing a stark contrast between the real estate mogul’s words and those of former President Ronald Reagan.

“On this day in 1987, President Reagan told Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” Today, @realDonaldTrump wants to build one. Sad!” Fox tweeted on Monday.

Reagan delivered the famous line in 1987, during a speech in Berlin calling on former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to do away with the Berlin Wall and thus the division between East and West Berlin.

{mosads}Reagan has long been hailed as an icon among conservative Republicans, and Trump and his supporters have often channeled the former president in describing their policy goals and ambitions.

Fox has been highly critical of Trump, particularly over his campaign promise to build a massive wall along the U.S. southern border and make Mexico pay for the project. The former Mexican president has joined the country’s current chief executive in categorically rejecting Trump’s proposal.

The border wall was among Trump’s highest-profile campaign promises, though he has faced opposition in Congress from both Democratic and many Republican lawmakers on the project.
