Clinton running mate: Russian probe moving into ‘potentially treason’

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) on Tuesday said the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election is now moving “beyond” obstruction of justice to “even potentially treason.”

The remarks from Kaine, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s running mate in last year’s presidential election, follow the news that Donald Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer offering compromising information about Clinton during a meeting last year. 

“The investigation — it’s not, nothing is proven yet, but we’re now beyond obstruction of justice in terms of what’s being investigated,” Kaine told reporters.

“This is moving into perjury, false statements and even potentially treason.”

{mosads}Trump Jr.’s meeting has raised eyebrows from Democrats and Republicans alike, who have said it would be unusual for someone central to a presidential campaign to meet with an individual seen as having ties to the Kremlin.

Trump Jr. and the White House have said President Trump’s eldest son has done nothing wrong. 

Trump Jr. on Tuesday went after the media and Democrats after the new details about the meeting surfaced.

“Media & Dems are extremely invested in the Russia story,” Trump Jr. tweeted Tuesday. “If this nonsense meeting is all they have after a yr, I understand the desperation!”
