WATCH: Carper: Listen to ‘recovered governors’ in the Senate
Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), a former two-term governor, wants President Trump and GOP leaders to listen to fellow “recovered governors” in the upper chamber for fixes to ObamaCare.
{mosads}“Those of us that are recovered governors — Democrat and Republican … we’ve had to be responsible for Medicaid, we’ve had to be responsible for making sure that people have access to affordable healthcare in our states,” Carper told The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper in an interview. “It’s logical for us to have some views that are worth considering, and we’re going to be very vocal about that.”
Carper, who served as Delaware’s governor between 1993 and 2001, said he reached out to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) on Tuesday to discuss bipartisan efforts to fix ObamaCare.
The top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, who revealed that he has not spoken to President Trump since January, also offered some advice to Trump for getting a bipartisan deal.
“If I were interested in being president, what I would have done is invited governors to come to the White House … invited the Senate and maybe House to come to the White House and have a good conversation,” Carper said.
