The House Democrat spearheading his party’s attempt to win back the majority in 2018 says he intends to field challengers for all GOP incumbents in the midterm election.
{mosads}“There’s no Republican that should go unchallenged this year, that’s always my goal,” Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), told The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper in an interview.
“That may be bit of challenge given there’s a lot of them,” he acknowledged.
“My job is to be able to get to 218 in one form or another or beyond, and that’s something that I take very seriously,” he said, referring to the number necessary to obtain a House majority. “We’ll see what happens, but I don’t have any intention on losing.”
Democrats need to net 24 seats to regain control of the House.
This week they launched a new effort to connect with middle-class voters, an economic plan labeled “A Better Deal.”
The DCCC chairman said the new effort wasn’t intended as a rebranding for Democrats.
“Some people may look at this as rebranding, that’s not my approach at all, and it’s not my goal here. We need to reconnect with the American people,” he said.
