GOP lawmaker does outdoor TV interview soaking wet as hurricane approaches

Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) found himself in the middle of a downpour on Friday in between live shots for CNN and MSNBC.

Twitter users posted screenshots of the soaked lawmaker still proceeding with an MSNBC interview Friday afternoon despite being drenched by the approaching Hurricane Harvey. Other screenshots from Twitter showed the lawmaker appearing dry moments before on rival network CNN.

The Texas lawmaker was speaking to the two networks about his state’s preparations for the Category 2 hurricane, which is likely to strengthen to a Category 3 by the time it makes landfall. Harvey is expected to be the largest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. since 2004 and in Texas since 1999.

Both Texas and Louisiana have declared states of emergency in the hours leading up to Harvey’s landfall. President Trump has said he is “closely monitoring” the situation.

In a statement on Thursday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said he had spoken to Trump, who pledged his full support to the state’s recovery and cleanup efforts.

“President Trump called Governor Abbott to offer federal support for the State of Texas as Hurricane Harvey approaches the Gulf Coast. The president pledged all available resources from the federal government to assist in preparation, and rescue and recovery efforts,” a statement from Abbot’s office read.

“The governor thanked the president for his pledge of support and assured him that the state is working hand-in-hand with local and federal partners on all issues related to the storm,” it added.
