Trump touts 3% economic growth

President Trump on Saturday touted strong economic growth in the U.S.

“Very little reporting about the GREAT GDP numbers announced yesterday (3.0 despite the big hurricane hits). Best consecutive Q’s in years!” he tweeted.

The nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded at an annual rate of 3 percent in the third quarter of 2017, according to the Commerce Department.

A Politico reporter pushed back on Trump’s claim that there was “very little reporting” on the growth, saying the news “is on the front page” of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Washington Post. An MSNBC producer also tweeted those front pages.

The New York Times noted that the economy is now growing at its fastest clip since mid-2014. The GDP also expanded at 3.1 percent in the spring, which means economic growth is on a six month stretch that is its best in three years.

The growth comes despite Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which hit Texas and Florida and were expected to have a short-term negative impact on the economy.

GDP is a key indicator of goods and services produced in the U.S.
